KOL ECHAD

Forestdale Heights Lodge
installation wrap-up

Rosalie Moscoe For this year's installation, Ray Moscoe, combines one of his favourite movies and theme for this year's installation, Back to the Future. Ray's vision takes us back to our roots - CVS programs, while at the same time we leap forward to the future to build membership and to revitalize our CVS and social programming.

Enter into Beth Torah, (shul of the Moscoe family) - newly renovated, modern and inviting. At the door of the banquet hall is a large poster board from the second movie in the series featuring "Marty McFly" (Michael J. Fox) and "Doc Brown" (Christopher Lloyd) with their famous Dolorean (time machine) car. Upon entering, we hear familiar music from the movie. To drive home the experience, there are music notes on the doors, a large fringed banner Back to the Future poster that drapes the food table. At the bar, we notice a poster of a car from the 50's and at the podium, a large 33 LP record replica.

Six round tables are draped with pale yellow silk table cloths with centerpieces of cellophane wrapped food baskets, complete with colourful turquoise and silver helium balloons reaching upward. The atmosphere is truly festive.

A fabulous, mouth watering, hot meat bar and Mediterranean dips with vegetables whets our appetite for the tantalizing meal to follow. (People line up for seconds!)

Michael Kates starts the program with a warm welcome to all. Bonnie Kates follows with a beautiful opening prayer. Albert Ohana handily conducts the candle lighting ceremony and proud members light their candles.

Candle number one lit by Lisa Rosen and Bonnie Kates, represents the Installation Committee responsible for the planning of tonight's exciting event.

Candle number two represents communication. Jeff Rosen and Harvey Silver, who work on all aspects of communication including print and our award-winning Kol Echad website head to the podium to light this candle.

Candle number three is lit by devoted members, Stan Horowitz, Ruth Pupko, and Nate Salter to represent the lodge's Vice Presidents, who help organize not only fun social programs, but also meaningful CVS programs.

Democracy and education are the key words for candle number four - crucial underpinnings of our lodge and are lit by our welcome new members, George and Charlene Garten, and devoted long time member, Michael Kates.

Our fifth candle represents concern for world Jewry, ever present not only in our minds but also in our programs. It is lit by Sandy and Barry Gordon.

Candle number six represents family - foundation of society, and especially our collective Jewish family. Those family members of Ray Moscoe that are present at the installation proudly light this most important candle: Moscoes - wife, Rosalie; daughter and son, Rhonda and Darren, brother Howard, cousin Harvey and sister and brother-in-law Isobel and Sheldon Kideckel.

Candle number seven represents the fine work of B'nai B'rith Canada especially for CVS, and a pleased Avery and Marla Matlow light this candle.

Howard Moscoe makes the motzi and a delicious meal follows complete with salad, sesame fish or stuffed chicken, tender side dishes and wine. We dine with piano music playing in the background.

To capture Installation 2010 for all time, Jeff Rosen continually snaps his camera's shutter, so that the event has a feeling of 'a walk on the red carpet'.

Entertainment follows by Mysterion, mentalist and magician who keeps us spellbound. He blindfolds himself (with duct tape and two separate blindfolds.) No one can figure out how he recounts what items were collected from attendees. A receipt (pulled from the purse of Honey Ohana) is put into his hand and he proceeds to guess the name and type of store and correctly gives the exact amount of the purchase! Our jaws drop as Mysterion twists an ordinary fork with his mind.

Sweet table follows with fruit and goodies complete with a mazel tov cake for Ray.

As Irv Pupko, president for the past two years, could not be at the installation, Ruth Pupko delivers her husband's sincere, heartfelt, outgoing speech. Ruth recounts in Irv's speech the many good deeds conducted through CVS programs and his pride for of all the activities including social programs and guest speakers at meetings and his hopes for the future. Nate Salter uninstalls the present officers of the lodge and then installs the new officers.

Toronto City Councillor Howard Moscoe happily presents his brother with a certificate from Toronto City Council, signed by Mayor David Miller and himself, wishing warm congratulations to Ray on his election as President to Forestdale Heights Lodge and wishes him much success.

Long time friend, Nate Salter introduces Ray Moscoe who gives his speech. Ray reminds us to remember our CVS roots, and recounts many of the great past programs such as buying a bus for physically and mentally handicapped children, driving for the Jewish blind and other present programs. He suggests keeping some of the smaller programs as we focus on one or two major projects.

Ray gives thanks to all those who participated in the evening's events and to all members and guests in attendance. To a standing ovation and hugs from family, Ray shakes hands with all who wish him mazel tov.

I present Ruth Pupko with a gift of appreciation for her term as the president's wife and extol Ruth for her continued giving and caring work for the lodge.

Comments from attendees include: "fabulous night", "great food", "a warm and fralich night", "fun evening", "feeling of comradery", "like a family simcha", "good feeling in the room".

People linger, - inspired, setting the tone for the next two years ahead for Forestdale Heights Lodge.
